Ethical Considerations in Eating Disorder Treatment- 2020
This presentation is geared toward a variety of treatment professionals who work with clients with an eating disorder diagnosis, including physicians, psychologists, dietitians, nurses, therapists, and social workers. This presentation will focus on general ethical dilemmas facing professionals who work with this population. This presentation will define the levels of care available in the United States health care system for clients with eating disorders and review the APA’s recommendations and guidelines for determining the appropriate level of care for an individual. Concepts such as coercion, forced treatment, freedom of choice, working as a treatment team and the role of self-disclosure will be explored at length. We will also discuss the role of personal beliefs related to weight, body appearance and nutrition and their impact on treatment outcomes. Case examples, current research and experiential will be utilized to help develop core ethical concepts.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Summarize available levels of care for clients with eating disorders and the guidelines for determining the appropriate level of care.
- Discuss concepts of coercion, forced treatment and freedom of choice as considerations while evaluating ethical dilemmas.
- Explain the importance of working within a treatment team and how to ethically communicate as a team with varied code of ethics.
- Discuss the role of self-disclosure and the impact on the client of personal beliefs related to weight, body appearance and nutrition

About the Speaker: Deanna James, LPC, R-DMT, CEDS
Ms. James is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Registered Dance and Movement Therapist and has been involved in the treatment of clients with Eating Disorder and trauma for over 13 years. She incorporates creative arts therapy, internal family systems therapy and cognitive behavioral therapies in her approach to therapeutic healing. Ms. James specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma based disorders and body image issues. She is a member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, The Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association and the American Dance Movement Therapy Association. Ms. James is currently the president of the Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association Board of Directors. Ms. James obtained her Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma in Psychology. She went on to obtain her Masters of Arts in Dance Movement Therapy and Counseling from Columbia College Chicago. Ms. James has completed level I training in the Internal Family Systems model of therapy. Deanna has a passion for working with clients with eating disorders and helping them find hope and healing.
